What TMJ Patients Want . . .

Jul 14, 2010

The TMJA conducted an on-line survey asking "What do TMJ patients want?" The following is a summary of the top 20 responses we received.

  1. The medical community to understand the multi-components of TMJ.
  2. To change the misconceptions of this disorder.
  3. For people in the world to understand what a TMJ implant is and what handicaps it puts on your life.
  4. A cure!
  5. Treatment to relieve the pain so I can open my mouth fully and enjoy all the food I used to like!
  6. For the condition to become a legitimate health issue to doctors.
  7. Emotional support in a society where, not only medics and dentists, but one's own immediate relations seem deliberately blind and deaf to one's devastating physical problems.
  8. Hope! Direction!
  9. Just to know others are out there that have the same problem. To hear other patients' stories and know they understand.
  10. Help!
  11. Doctors who are sympathetic to the condition and offer compassionate care.
  12. Research, clinical studies, standard treatments and practices dealing with TMJ and all of its causes.
  13. PAIN RELIEF!
  14. Scientific and evidence based practice data.
  15. To know if TMJ is the cause of other illnesses or are other illnesses the cause of TMJ.
  16. Research dollars to be spent differently.
  17. Medical progress.
  18. To get the word out about TMJ Disorders. Too many doctors and dentists still have no idea that it even exists and can be a major problem.
  19. To be recognized by the orthopedic community; after all the TMJ is a joint in the body.
  20. The best damn science this country can give us and a lot of it!
