Happy Holidays!

In this season of giving, we hope you'll consider making a tax-deductible contribution to the TMJA.

We are committed to advocating for the much needed scientific research and providing you with reliable, up-to-date information about TMJDs, but we can't do this without your financial support.

Your gift will make a difference in the lives of everyone affected by TMJ disorders.
Questions to Ask About Your Medicine

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is the lead Federal agency charged with improving the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all Americans. As one of 12 agencies within the Department of Health and Human Services, AHRQ supports health services research that will improve the quality of health care and promote evidence-based decision making.

Orthognathic Treatment of TMJD

A recent abstract publication appeared in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, entitled "Orthognathic treatment and temporomandibular disorders: A systematic review. Part 2. Signs and symptoms and meta-analyses".

Orthognathic surgery basically involves cutting the jaw bones and repositioning them to a desired alignment.

The following are the conclusions from this study:
Although orthognathic surgery should not be advocated solely for treating TMD, patients having orthognathic treatment for correction of their dentofacial deformities and who are also suffering from TMD appear more likely to see improvement in their signs and symptoms than deterioration.

Launching of a New TMJA Web site

Early in 2010, we will launch a sister web site to our current tmj.org site that will provide better access to information, offer more opportunities for you to interact with us and other TMJD patients, leverage the power of social networking, and allow us to reach a broader audience.
With over 700 stores in the iGive Mall and access to hundreds of exclusive coupons, free shipping deals, and sales, iGive is the smart way to shop. So save a trip to the mall, and avoid the long lines. You'll never pay more when you reach a store through iGive, and up to 26% of each purchase benefits The TMJ Association! Start iGiving at: www.iGive.com/TMJA

TMJA Receives Google Grant

The TMJA was recently selected by Google to participate in their Google Grants program. This program allows over 4,000 non-profit organizations to achieve their goals by helping them promote their web sites via advertising on Google. We're excited by this opportunity!

NIH Under New Managment

The new Director for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Francis Collins, is no stranger to NIH. He was the Director of the National Human Genome Institute and led the international consortium that mapped and sequenced the entire human genome earlier in this decade. Not surprisingly, he is enthusiastic about genetic research and upbeat about the promise of “personalized medicine,” the subject of a new book he has written coming out in January. Read more...
