TMJ Treatments Raise Ethical Issues about TMJD Trial Conduct & Clinical Care

One of the top priorities in the reform of the national health care agenda is the study of medical treatments to determine which ones really work,  in order to eliminate the often costly but ineffective and possibly harmful alternatives.

The authors of a study determining how TMJ studies are conducted state: “With some 20 years of knowledge of evidence-based healthcare, the meager attention to these issues [clinical trial methodology] begins to raise ethical issues about TMJD trial conduct and clinical care.”  Click here to read full story.

"It's a Rotten Way to Be Wounded!"

So said Ernest Hemingway’s hero Jake Barnes in The Sun Also Rises, describing the castrating wound he suffered when his plane was shot down in World War I, making sexual intercourse impossible.  Hemingway would no doubt have been astonished to learn that some 16 percent of women with no identifiable gynecological disorders suffer a condition called vulvodynia at some point in their lives.

Researchers studying women with vulvodynia are discovering that they often show increased pain sensitivity at other sites in the body, as do fibromyalgia and many TMJD patients.  Click here to read full story.

Happy Birthday Terrie!

"I can think of no better way to celebrate her recent birthday than to recognize all Terrie Cowley has done to support and advocate for the estimated 36 million people in the United States suffer from Temporomandibular Joint and Muscle Disorders (TMJDs).

Terrie co-founded The TMJ Association, Ltd. (TMJA) in 1986 and over the years she has promoted research and provided support and education for thousands of TMJD patients and their loved ones.  Most importantly, she has worked tirelessly to educate health care providers, government regulators and the scientific community on the need to understand TMJDs and develop safe and effective treatments. She has done much of this on her own time, and at her own expense.  Through her efforts we are beginning to see progress and the recognition by the scientific community that TMJDs are a complex disease that must be addressed by the coordinated research of experts across many disciplines.

Please honor Terrie by sending her a message of support on her birthday, and please, if you are able, contribute to the TMJA on her behalf."

Don Birk, Chairman of the Board of Directors

The TMJ Association, Ltd.
